Rye Meads Nature Reserve: new path
The site
A wetland reserve beside the River Lee which is the RSPB's only nature reserve in Hertfordshire. The reserve comprises a variety of wetland habitats, including lagoons, pools, reed beds and scrapes. These support birds such as wildfowl, waders and bitterns, as well as many other kinds of wildlife.
The brief
Following a successful application for grant funding, Maydencroft Rural were commissioned to lay a new Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) compliant path way around the nature reserve.
The solution
The decision was made to use a recycled aggregate, tarmac planings. This is a sustainable construction method, which allows easy access for mobility vehicles.
The result
This project has enabled the nature reserve to increase their involvement with the local community and allows for disabled users to access the further reaches of the reserve.
