Common Ragwort (Senecio jacobaea)

Recognisable by its distinctive yellow flower, Common Ragwort thrives in neglected grass fields, under-grazed or over-grazed pasture, uncropped ground and sand dunes.

Poisonous to horses, and equally as dangerous to other grazing livestock, it's a potential killer. But the problem is that it's a real pain to remove, and even harder to keep away.

That's where we come in. If you need to get rid of ragwort urgently, Maydencroft Rural has a variety of effective and economical treatments that can do the job for you.

Why choose Maydencroft Rural?

  • a free consultation
  • different methods of control to fit your need
  • fully-qualified operatives
  • a full method statement and risk assessment
  • COSHH assessments when needed
  • an expert understanding of environmentally sensitive areas

The legal issues

Ragwort is labelled as an injurious weed under the Weeds Act 1959. This means that, if the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) believe that it's growing on your property, they can serve notice requiring you to take action to prevent it spreading. An unreasonable failure to comply with a notice is an offence. So it's best to keep it in check before things get to this stage.

Methods of control

  • Cutting is an emergency treatment to prevent seeding, but one that must be followed by a control technique.
  • Pulling by hand provides immediate results, but will require more than one treatment. Labour is supplied.
  • Selective herbicide application can be done by knapsack spraying or boom spraying and is extremely effective.
  • Weed wiping uses a smaller amount of, and less harmful, chemicals than selective herbicide application, although this varies depending on the height of surrounding vegetation
