East India Dock Basin: car park
The site
The East India Dock Basin is the last remaining section of the once grand East India Docks, famous for transporting spices from the Far East in the 1880's. Now the site is a nature reserve and attracts birds such as Black Redstart and Kingfishers. A stone's throw away from Canary Wharf, the site provides breathtaking views of the Thames and the impressive O2 (Millennium Dome).
The brief
To resurface an existing car park in a visually and environmentally sensitive urban area.
The solution
We removed the existing gravel car park surface and transferred it to a nearby site. We jet washed the macadam surface clean and repaired where necessary and finished by laying a resin surface and spreading buff gravel.
The result
To provide a rural solution in an urban context, whilst recycling former materials. The visual impact of the gravel surface was retained but now the car park benefits from a hard standing usable surface.
